The F-1 visa is a student visa that allows foreign nationals to attend an academic or language educational institution in the USA. This includes universities, colleges, high schools and certain language courses. With the F-1 visa, you can therefore complete education and training in the United States.
Both the applicants and the educational institutions must meet certain requirements:
Educational institution: The institution must be certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and registered in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Only then can the required I-20 form be issued.
Students: You must be admitted for full-time study at an SEVP-certified educational institution. Proof of financial means for tuition fees and living expenses is also required. You must intend to return to your home country after completing your studies.
The length of stay with an F-1 visa is tied to the duration of the program. After completing your studies or program, you may remain in the country for up to 60 days, for example to travel or make preparations for departure.
Under certain conditions, it is possible to work during your studies:
On-Campus Employment: You may work on campus for up to 20 hours per week during the lecture period, for example in the library or cafeteria.
Internships: After completing your studies, you have the opportunity to gain practical experience as part of the "Optional Practical Training" (OPT).
The process of applying for the F-1 visa involves several steps:
Authorization: Obtaining an accreditation from an SEVP-certified educational institution.
SEVIS registration: Payment of the SEVIS fee and receipt of the I-20 form.
Visa application: Fill out the DS-160 form and make an appointment at the US Embassy or Consulate.
Interview: Conducting a visa interview in which you will have to provide financial proof and your intention to return to your home country, among other things.
