F- vs. J- Visa How do the categories differ?

Both the F-1 and J-1 visas allow international guests to stay in the USA for educational purposes. Nevertheless, there are important differences in terms of target group, requirements, work opportunities and legal framework conditions.

F-1 Visa (Student Visa)

What is the F-1 visa?

The F-1 visa allows international students to pursue full-time academic studies at a U.S. university, high school, or language school.

Requirements

  • Educational Institution: Must be SEVP-certified (required to issue the I-20 form).

  • Students: Must show proof of admission, sufficient financial resources, and intent to return home after completing the program.

Duration of Stay

Valid for the length of the study program, plus 60 days for departure or post-study preparations.


Work Options with F-1

  • On-Campus: Up to 20 hours/week during semesters.

  • OPT (Optional Practical Training): Allowed after graduation, up to 12 months.

J-1 Visa (Exchange Visitor Visa)

What is the J-1 visa?

The J-1 visa is designed for participants in cultural and educational exchange programs, such as students, interns, au pairs, researchers, or guest lecturers.

Requirements

  • Sponsor Organization: Must be officially designated by the U.S. Department of State (issues the DS-2019 form).

  • Participants: Must prove adequate funding and intent to return home after the program.

Duration of Stay

Depends on the program (e.g., semester, research project, or au pair year), with a 30-day grace period after completion.


Work Options with J-1

  • Only within program scope. Any additional work requires explicit sponsor approval.
